AAUW Hawaii (state organization) awarded Kathy Hanson financial support to attend the 2012 Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL). She attended the conference with approximately 600 other student leaders from across the United States and abroad.
Kathy is a single mom of three, a Domestic Violence Survivor and currently attends college full time at Windward Community College (WCC), entering into her fourth semester of completing prerequisites for a bachelor’s degree in social science, maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Kathy plans to continue on to the master’s program at UH Manoa. After completion, she plans to work with her community and non-profit organizations.
Kathy is the Honolulu Branch Student Affiliate Liaison and is a dual member of the Windward Oahu branch. Kathy works on the WCC campus in the Student Support Services as a Peer Tutor and Mentor, serves as the president of Psi Beta National Honor Society of Psychology, and she is the vice president of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society of two-year colleges. Kathy is in the final stages of opening up WCC’s first AAUW Campus Club in the fall.
She served on the Sexual Violence Prevention Task force for the WCC campus and recruited a team of 19 other students to plan a campus fair, Violence Free WCC, to promote awareness and prevention involving Domestic and Sexual Violence and distributed AAUW’s latest research material on Sexual Harassment on school campus. The fair took place on the WCC campus on April 18, 2012 with AAUW as the community sponsor of the event, and members from the Windward and Honolulu branches staffed a booth at the fair.
