Work Smart at the AARP Women and Money conference

AARP’s Women and Money conference addresses the problems of women living longer but making less money, while often taking care of children and their parents.

Gerri Walsh, J.D., President of FINRA Investor Education Foundation, will give the keynote, “How Women Outshine Men at Investing”. Visit resource tables and take part in two of seven workshops, with topics that include:

  • Recipe for Financial Freedom –Managing Credit, Debt, and a Spending Plan
  • Smart Investing for Women
  • Worksmart Workshop™ – Negotiating Salary and Benefits
  • Understanding Social Security and Medicare
  • Effective Retirement Planning
  • Estate Planning
  • Strategies for Generating Income in Retirement and Non-traditional work

AAUW Honolulu will be presenting its Work Smart workshop to the participants of the upcoming AARP Women and Money conference, to be held in July.

AAUW Honolulu’s Work Smart helps participants gain confidence to negotiate through a two-hour session of facilitated discussion and role-play.

Participants will learn:

  • How to identify and articulate your personal value
  • How to develop an arsenal of persuasive responses and other negotiation strategies, including how to get a raise or promotion
  • How to conduct objective market research to benchmark a target salary and benefits
  • About the wage gap, including its long-term consequences

Learning these negotiating skills are important because AAUW’s research shows women are paid significantly less just one year out of college. Currently, women on average earn about 80 cents to every dollar a male makes.

By being able to confidently – and successfully – negotiate, participants will be able to secure a better salary and help to close the gender wage gap, secure better benefits, pay off debt faster and save for retirement.
