Girls Talk Back (GTB) is a summer program for girls between the ages 13-19, focused on developing leadership, peacebuilding, social justice, and applying these skills to address community issues outside the classroom. Upon the program’s conclusion, participants will have the opportunity to present their projects and progress at a TED Talk-style forum. Participants may use the forum as an opportunity to launch campaigns to garner support—financial and in-kind—for their projects. GTB was created by a core partnership of Ceeds of Peace, AAUW Honolulu and Women’s Fund of Hawaii, who together identified gaps in our education system’s ability to develop under-represented leaders, specifically women of color and even more specifically Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian women. The GTB pilot will focus on serving 15-20 girls residing in Waimānalo. The course will be taught at Hui Mālama O Ke Kai for six weeks from June 10 to July 19, 2019.
As part of the course, we are looking for female mentors. The role of GTB mentors is to advise and support the GTB participants to develop an action plan by the end of the six week summer program. Ideally, the mentors and the participants will keep in touch beyond the summer program for the mentors to continue to provide the support the participants need while implementing their project. One mentor will be assigned to each action team and the action team will likely consist of 2-4 girls.
GTB mentors will be required to:
- Attend the 1.5 hour mentor orientation on Saturday June 22nd 1PM to 2:30PM at Yacht Harbor Tower in Honolulu
- Participate in GTB session on Friday June 28th 9AM to 1PM at Hui Mālama O Ke Kai in Waimānalo to advise and support your assigned action team to develop their plan
- Check-in with your assigned action team weekly during the week of July 1st, July 8th and July 15th to advise and support as needed
- Attend the TED Talks-style forum where the participants will present their projects and progress — date/time and location TBD but will likely be evening of July 19th or one evening week of July 22nd
So we are looking at 10-15 hours of your time this summer to advise and support the girls to develop their action plan. Again, we are hoping that you can continue to support the girls as they implement their project after the summer program but that will be up to you.
