AAUW’s research shows that while boys and girls start with same level of interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, over time girls become less interested. At a time when there’s a severe shortage of STEM professionals, there’s an even greater problem of women being underrepresented in those jobs.
AAUW Honolulu’s STEM Team is making a difference in enticing and sparking interest in tech jobs for the next generation of women. Tech Savvy is AAUW Honolulu’s one-day STEM conference for girls in the sixth to ninth grades, with speakers guiding them through a variety of hands-on activities.
Members of the STEM Team lay down the groundwork for this event through its various committees. The Volunteer Committee reaches out to schools, universities and the community to find volunteers of for the event, while the Adult Curriculum Committee and Student Curriculum Committee finds speakers.
The Outreach Committee promotes Tech Savvy to middle and high schools and coordinates information about companies and organizations that may be willing to sponsor the event or make contributions to the Fundraising Committee.
The STEM Team also administers the scholarship for the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, the world’s largest gathering of women technologists. Scholarship recipients will attend the conference, taking back what they’ve learned to their schools and communities.
